FULBRIGHT U.S. & FOREIGN STUDENT PROGRAM RESOURCES FOR DEPARTMENTS

The Fulbright Student Program provides transformative experiences overseas for U.S. students and welcomes some of the world's top students to pursue graduate programs at U.S. institutions. The Fulbright Foreign Student applicants help diversify campus's international student population and, because they come with funding for the first year, they offset department funding packages that can be used to support other students and initiatives. Additionally, hosting and sending students can lead to international recognition as a Top Producing Institution and can contribute positively to our global rankings. There are multiple resources for UC San Diego departments to support and amplify the Fulbright Programs on campus.

Graduate Students with Funding Packages

For graduate students at UC San Diego who receive departmental support while pursuing their degree, it is important to note that Fulbright is not an "over and above" award, nor should it be "duplicative" for other scholarships, fellowships, grants, or salaries from other sources received during the Fulbright grant period. Therefore, should a graduate student receive a Fulbright award and the award does not satisfy the Graduate Funding Reform (GFR) minimum requirement, the department will be required to supplement the award for the period which the awardee is pursuing their Fulbright Award.

For more information, review the Fulbright Policies Manual for U.S. Students or raise a ticket with the Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs's Financial Support Unit.

Promote Fulbright Opportunities to Students

The biggest challenge to recruit students for the U.S. Student Program is lack of awareness among students of the amazing opportunities afforded to them through the Fulbright Program. Everyone on campus can do their part to inform students of the Fulbright. Though a bachelor's degree at the time of grant is a requirement for any Fulbright, it is never too early for students to start thinking about a Fulbright and connect with campus resources to learn how to create a high-quality, competitive application. In addition to reviewing the website, students interested in the Fulbright U.S. Student Program should contact Jay Minert, UC San Diego's Fulbright Program Advisor.

ISEO Sponsored Student Services Unit Outreach Campaign

For the Fulbright Foreign Student Program, the student is awarded the Fulbright funding pending admission to a U.S. institution. Due to the admissions cycle, the student is asked to indicate in their application to UC San Diego is they will receive organizational sponsorship even though they haven't officially received the award. The Sponsored Student Services Unit conducts departmental outreach to department chairs and other contacts to inform them of all the students who indicated in their applications that they expect to receive organizational support. When reviewing applications, departments should pay close attention to this section as there could be exceptional Fulbright grantees applying to one of your department's degree programs.
